Robots have to dodge obstacles in real world environments. Many of them use cameras and AI do adapt to moving or static objects. SANDO explores the idea of robots avoiding unknown moving obstacles. MIT researchers developed this method that plans a flight path for drones that enables them to get around unknown obstacles that may be unpredictable. SANDO stands for Safe AutoNomous trajectory planning for Dynamic unknOwn environments. This planner simply needs to know the top speed of obstacles to get around them in any environment, without a map.
As the researchers explain, this drone “always computes trajectories which are guaranteed to avoid collisions with moving obstacles in unknown environments. SANDO starts by mapping out a safety corridor through the robot’s environment. This corridor is a series of connected regions of 3D space the robot can travel through, which are guaranteed not to contain any obstacles.”
