Climbing robots have a couple of advantages over rovers. They can access areas not possible for regular robots. They can climb walls and get over steep obstacles. Take LORIS for instance: it is a free-climbing robot with passive grippers and wrist joints to grasp securely. Forces are distributed among its grippers strategically to reduce risk of unexpected detachment.
As the above video shows, this robot can climb flat cinder block walls and uneven rocky surfaces.
