Shape changing robots and drones are nothing new. We have covered a bunch of them that can be adapt to take on complex missions. A team at Virginia Tech led by Michael Bartlett have now come up with a shape changing drone that uses liquid metal to bend and change shape.
Must see robots & drones:
This drone has a kirigami inspired structure. It has a low melting point alloy endoskeleton inside a rubber skin. A set of tendril-like heaters where used to heat the alloy. The elastomer skin keeps the melted metal in place.
