In the past few months, we have covered plenty of robots that are capable of cutting and slicing food items. Cambridge researchers have come up with a robotic lettuce leaf peeling system capable of getting the job done in a few seconds.
The idea is to automate the process of sorting crops and removing their outer leaves after harvesting to make life easier for farm workers. As the researchers explain:
The lettuce and stem detection algorithm was tested on 180 pictures of individual lettuces taken with the web camera at heights of between 70cm and 100cm. A total of 10 different iceberg lettuces were used in different positions, and with varying light direction and intensity, with some positioned alongside background objects arranged to represent clutter.
