In the past few months, we have covered plenty of robots that are capable of cutting and slicing food items. Cambridge researchers have come up with a robotic lettuce leaf peeling system capable of getting the job done in a few seconds.

Lettuce peeling robot

The idea is to automate the process of sorting crops and removing their outer leaves after harvesting to make life easier for farm workers. As the researchers explain:

The lettuce and stem detection algorithm was tested on 180 pictures of individual lettuces taken with the web camera at heights of between 70cm and 100cm. A total of 10 different iceberg lettuces were used in different positions, and with varying light direction and intensity, with some positioned alongside background objects arranged to represent clutter.
