Here is a cool project that explores the idea of attaching a backpack drone to a dragonfly or other small insects. DragonflEye has a drone that stays on the dragonfly like a backpack with the electronics and sensors inside.

This micro-aerial vehicle comes with a solar cell that is charged from a light source. As researchers from Draper and Howard Hughes Medical Institute explain, the goal of this project is:

to create new optogenetic tools that send guidance commands from the backpack to special “steering” neurons inside the dragonfly nerve cord.

Such tech can be used to reduce the loss of pollinators by monitoring flight patterns and migration. More info is available here.
