Robots are getting better at adapting to all kinds of surfaces. Soft terrain can still pose problems to them though. STANCE is an online soft terrain adaptation algorithm that allows robots to adapt their locomotion strategy depending on the type of terrain.
As the above video shows, the HyQ robot was able to use this to traverse and transition between multiple terrains with different properties.
