Robots are getting smarter all the time. In the future, we will be able to rely on them to navigate uneven terrain and reach areas that are difficult to reach for humans. Pleurobot, developed by researchers at Switzerland’s EPFL, happens to be a bio-inspired robot that adapts how it moves to navigate uneven terrain. It changes its gait pattern to overcome obstacles.

The robot is inspired by a salamander, so it can swim and walk. It is cable of aquatic stepping. It has 27 joints and a low center of mass. Its flexible spine makes it ideal for search and rescue scenarios.
