Meet Nikola the Android Kid: a robot by the researchers from the RIKEN Guardian Robot Project in Japan that can express happiness, sadness, fear, angle, surprise, and disgust. It has 29 pneumatic actuators to control the movements of its artificial muscles.
The pneumatic actuators used by this robot allow for silent, smooth movement. They are placed based on the Facial Action Coding System (FACS). Nikola currently doesn’t have a body but the goal is to build an Android that can emotionally communicate and assist people.
