Space rovers are going to become a whole lot more sophisticated over time. Zhurong or Perseverance are already exploring the surface of Mars. These robots are currently not capable of scientifically exploring craters, caves, and rock crevices. Legged robots are more ideal for these missions. The DFKI Robotics Innovation Center is working with the Italian Institute of Technology (IIT) and Airbus Defence and Space Ltd (ADS) to develop a novel navigation system for 4 and 6 legged robots to enable them to navigate on complex surfaces.
